Second Sitters

Second Sitters curated by Hannah Stanton and Jude Dennis

“Tackling the boundaries separating craft and art, the new Second Sitters exhibition looks at the intricate thought process behind the finished product – highlighting the emerging trend of upholsterers as artists.” RedOnline

Second Sitters is a series of exhibitions curated by Jude and Hannah exploring the Craft of the upholsterer. The aim is to showcase upholstery (craft) and the upholsterer (craftsman) in ways not seen before, showing it to be a relevant art and design tool and not just a trade process as many people believe. By providing a platform for artists, designers, upholsterers to present and showcase their own work, Second Sitters hopes to educate and inspire the public and industry, promoting not only the maker but also this often misunderstood ‘invisible’ craft. Showcasing upholstery as cross-disciplinary, the works include conceptual reworkings of Victorian iron backs, contemporary caning of Thonet chairs, to playful takes on tradition and institutionalisation using stacking polyprops.
